The topical corticosteroid, desonide, appears to be effective in induced conjunctival allergic reactions and in active seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
The drug also appears to be safe, with no observed side effects, say Andrea Leonardi, M.D., and colleagues at University of Padova, and the Medical Division of SIFI S.p.A., Catania, Italy.
They performed studies to test the drug for treatment of both an induced conjunctival allergic reaction, and for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. In the study of induced allergic reaction, 12 allergic but inactive patients were exposed in both eyes to increasing doses of an allergen until a late-phase reaction was obtained.
