Tumour nuclear grade and tumour proliferative activity of pre-treatment tumours could be important indicators of pathologic responsiveness to neo-adjuvant, anthracycline-based chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.
United States researchers report that nuclear grade and mitotic activity of pre-treatment tumours correlated significantly with both complete pathologic response and near-complete response in 82 patients with breast carcinoma who were treated with neo-adjuvant chemotherapy.
Approximately 15 percent of the patients (12) had a complete pathologic response to the neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. This consisted of either a conventional dose of fluorouracil, doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (FAC) or dose-escalated FAC. Another 28 percent had a near complete response. But, 57 percent of the women had significant residual disease present either at the primary site or in the axillary lymph nodes.
