Degree of freckling and habitual midday sun exposure during school lunch times are associated with the development of melanocytic nevi in adolescents in Queensland, Australia. Exposure to the sun during summer holiday is not, however, associated with melanocytic nevi, according to investigators.
The investigators, from the Population and Clinical Sciences Division of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, followed a group of 111 school children for up to five years.
The children were aged 12 to 13 years at the beginning of the study. Whole-body counts of melanocytic nevi and sun exposure histories were updated every year. Log-linear regression was used to analyze nevus counts on the full-body, the face and neck region and the shoulder and back region. Results showed that mean whole body nevus counts increased from approximately 130.1 in 1990 to about 215.5 in 1994. Counts were consistently higher on the shoulder and back compared with the face and neck regions.
