NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 19 – The risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is elevated in patients with inflammatory arthritis, even when weight is not excessive and disease activity is relatively mild, report investigators from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In an assessment of 87 nondiabetic patients with inflammatory arthritis, Dr. Patrick H. Dessein and colleagues found a 29% prevalence of insulin resistance and a 70% prevalence of dyslipidemia. Arthritis was associated with dyslipidemia, including higher ratios of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol, and with a 3.4-fold higher rate of having a family history of premature coronary artery disease compared with 30 age-, race- and sex-matched control subjects.
