PHILADELPHIA, PA — April 2, 2002 — For the first time, a new study reveals that quality of life is significantly improved after implantation of an artificial sphincter in patients treated for severe fecal incontinence.
The study appears in the April 2002 issue of Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, the official journal of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS).
The study, conducted by French researchers, analyzed 16 patients (14 females, two males, mean age 43 years) implanted with an Acticon Neosphincter to assess quality-of-life differences in patients before and after artificial sphincter implantation and compare them with clinical incontinence scores and anal resting pressure. The artificial sphincter is a new device that a previous study showed to be well tolerated with good functional results after 25 months.
