ADHD Manifestations in Preschool Children Similar to Those in Older Children

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Feb 28 – Preschool children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are similar to older children with ADHD in terms of disease severity, impaired functioning, and psychiatric comorbidity rates, according to a recent report.
Dr. Timothy E. Wilens and colleagues, from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, compared the disease manifestations of ADHD in 165 preschool children and 381 school-age children.

The average age of ADHD onset was just over 2 years in the preschool group and just under 4 years in the school-age group (p < 0.001). However, the groups did not differ in the symptomatic presentation of ADHD, the authors state in the March issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Both groups had similar psychiatric comorbidity rates. Over 70% of patients in each group were diagnosed with other psychiatric conditions, the investigators note. Patients in both groups demonstrated substantial impairment in social, school, and overall functioning….
