Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-guided balloon angioplasty halves the need for stenting at the cost of a more expensive and complex procedure, according to the results of the Balloon Equivalent to STent (BEST) trial reported in the Feb. 4 issue of Circulation.
“Balloon angioplasty guided by IVUS makes it possible to choose the balloon size according to the true vessel diameter and to detect suboptimal results requiring subsequent stent implantation,” write François Schiele, MD, PhD, from University Hospital Jean-Minjoz, in Besançon Cedex, France, and colleagues. “The BEST study aimed to assess whether this strategy would give the same results as systematic stenting.”
