Early recognition of varicella zoster virus in acute central nervous system viral infections is necessary for effective antiviral treatment.
A previous multi-centre study had suggested that the varicella zoster virus was the aetiologic agent most frequently associated with viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS). In addition, it was noted that the infection often appeared without a rash.
