High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema May Occur at Lower Altitudes

According to conventional wisdom, high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) occurs above 8,000 feet. However, a case series reported in the January issue of Chest suggests that otherwise healthy individuals can develop this syndrome even at moderate altitudes. The editorialist puts these findings and their implications into clinical context, but warns that final conclusions may be premature pending confirmation.

“HAPE at moderate altitude is said to be rare. Our study is the first to describe such a large group of patients who acquired HAPE at moderate altitude, which shows this condition may be underestimated,” lead author Andre L. Gabry, MD, from Moutiers Hospital in France, says in a news release. “Patients in the study were relatively young skiers. One explanation for this is that young skiers seem more likely to start intense physical activity without prior training than older skiers.”
