Chromosome 10p seems to express a susceptibility locus for bulimia nervosa. Bulimia nervosa shows a strong familial tendency arising from additive genetic effects. Furthermore, certain behaviours associated with bulimia nervosa, such as self-induced vomiting, also appear to be heritable.
Against this background, researchers from the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, and other centres in the United States conducted a linkage analysis of 308 families with eating disorders. The researchers identified the families using a proband suffering from bulimia nervosa.
