Findings from a study by German researchers appear to confirm the hypothesis that a diminished number of nephrons at birth is a causative factor for essential hypertension, at least in Caucasians, according to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine for January 9th.
Results of previous animal and human studies support the concept that low nephron number might leave a person more vulnerable to high blood pressure, Dr. Kerstin Amann, a pathologist at the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg, told Reuters Health.
