Thiazide Diuretics Less Damaging to Bone Than Loop Diuretics

Loop diuretics are potentially harmful to bone and must be investigated further to determine if their long-term use causes osteoporosis.

Until further evidence is obtained, thiazide diuretics should be used instead of loop diuretics in this therapy to avoid risking deleterious effects on bone metabolism, urge researchers led by Dr. L. Rejnmark from Aarhus University Hospital and Aarhus University, in Aarhus, Denmark.

Because thiazide diuretics reduce and loop diuretics increase urinary calcium, these investigators examined their effects on electrolytes, calcitropic hormones and biochemical bone markers in 40 postmenopausal women with osteopenia. The five-period crossover study compared four active doses against placebo.
