Addition of Protective Vaccine Improves Postexposure Prophylaxis of Anthrax

By adding a protective antigen-based vaccine to antibiotic prophylaxis after exposure to Bacillus anthracis in guinea pigs, Israeli scientists have shown that flair-ups of the disease upon cessation of antibiotic treatment are prevented.

The researchers also report in the November issue of Infection and Immunity that cefazolin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) are unsuitable for the treatment of anthrax. Moreover, ciprofloxacin proved to be significantly more protective than tetracycline.
