Mentally ill patients in Sweden are being kept in compulsory treatment for too long because doctors are more likely to give them “leaves of absence” rather than to discharge them, according to a report by the National Board of Health and Welfare.
One reason is that although a patient may otherwise be capable of a living a normal life, doctors want to ensure that the patient remains on medication.
