Autoimmune Process Linked to Atrial Fibrillation

An autoimmune process may be an upstream factor in atrial fibrillation. This is suggested by a finding that autoantibodies against sarcolemmal Na-K-ATPase (the sodium-potassium ATPase pump) are closely related to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients with congestive heart failure.

Researchers in Tokyo, Japan, investigated the clinical implications of autoantibodies as upstream indicators of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in 95 patients with congestive heart failure (left ventricular ejection fraction of 45 percent or less).

Circulating autoantibodies against myosin (detected by immunofluorescence), autoantibodies against beta 1-adrenergic receptors (detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and autoantibodies against NA-K-ATPase (also detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) were screened in 48 patients with coronary artery disease, 47 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and 48 age-matched hypertensive controls.
