Gene-Expression Signature Predicts Survival in Breast Cancer

Gene-expression profiling may be the wave of the future, according to the results of a study published in the Dec. 19 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Although it was more accurate at predicting prognosis for breast cancer than either nodal status or histology, an accompanying editorial suggests it is too soon to incorporate this marker into clinical guidelines.

“A more accurate means of prognostication in breast cancer will improve the selection of patients for adjuvant systemic therapy,” write Marc J. van de Vijver, MD, PhD, and colleagues from the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. “The gene-expression profile we studied is a more powerful predictor of the outcome of disease in young patients with breast cancer than standard systems based on clinical and histologic criteria.”
