New data from the US Physicians’ Health Study indicates that the risk of stroke increases significantly as body mass index (BMI) increases, according to a report in the December 9th and 23rd issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
“There is a clear linear association between BMI and stroke,” lead author, Dr. Tobias Kurth told Reuters Health. “This holds true for total, ischemic, and hemorrhagic stroke, and is independent of possible biological mediators such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol,” he added.
