Severity and extent of ischaemia on dipyridamole/dobutamine stress echocardiography along with more than three reversible perfusion defects are strong predictors of cardiac events in patients undergoing major vascular surgery.
This finding applies particularly to patients in the moderate-risk category, say researchers from the University of Siena, Siena, Italy.
Using clinical markers and left ventricular function at rest, Dr S. Mondillo and colleagues assigned 188 patients to one of three risk groups – low (40 patients), moderate (115) and high risk (33). The patients were then randomly submitted to dipyridamole (64 patients), dobutamine (63) stress echocardiography and dipyridamole perfusion scintigraphy (61).
