There is a question as to whether the serotoninergic antidepressant venlafaxine should remain a first line drug in patients with suicidal ideation, according to a study among British patients. This concern is raised by Dr Nicholas Buckley and colleagues at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Canberra Hospital, Canberra, Australia. They assessed deaths in Scotland, England, and Wales due to acute poisoning by a single drug, with or without co-ingestion of alcohol, using data from government agencies for the years 1993 to 1999.
Their study was prompted by the burgeoning use of newer serotoninergic antidepressants during the 1990s. Assessment of some previous data indicates that venlafaxine, in particular, may not be as safe in overdose as other serotoninergic drugs, with reports of deaths, arrhythmias, and seizures.
