New Approach Effective In Asthma Management

Asthma treatment directed at normalizing induced sputum eosinophil count can reduce exacerbations and hospital admissions without the need for additional anti-inflammatory treatment.

This has been demonstrated by Dr Ian Pavord and colleagues from the Division of Respiratory Medicine Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, England, in an assessment of reduction of eosinophilic inflammation reducing asthma exacerbations compared with the conventional approach advocated by the British Thoracic Society.

Management decisions are traditionally based on assessment of symptoms, airway function, and use of rescue beta-agonists. Clinicians enrolled 74 patients with moderate to severe asthma who were randomly allocated to management by either BTS asthma guidelines or by normalization of the induced sputum eosinophil count. Patients allocated to the sputum eosinophil group had inhaled or oral corticosteroids regulated in response to changes in eosinophil concentration as the study progressed.
