Very Elderly Patients Appear to Benefit Most From Statin Therapy for CAD



Among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), statin therapy reduces the risk of all-cause mortality

regardless of age, according to the results of an observational study. In fact, contrary to conventional wisdom, the greatest risk reduction occurred among patients 80 years and older.

Yet, as other studies have shown, statins were underutilized for patients 65 years and older who were hospitalized with CAD symptoms. Dr. Joseph B. Muhlestein, of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and colleagues report the findings in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology for November 20
