There are no significant differences in pain severity and duration between two groups of patients with temporomandibular disorders – those with masticatory muscle pain and those with intracapsular pain.
Investigators based at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, United States, say this finding conflicts with previous studies. But, patients with masticatory muscle pain showed more dysfunctional behavioural profiles and significantly higher psychological distress than those with intracapsular pain.
