Although fibrous dysplasia surrounding the optic canal results in narrowing of the canal, there is no loss of vision, according to a new study, which suggests that prophylactic decompression of the optic nerve is not indicated for fibrous dysplasia alone.
In the November 21st issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Janice S. Lee from the University of California at San Francisco, and colleagues report the results of their study of 38 patients who had fibrous dysplasia of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone.
