Cancer Researchers Warn EU Red Tape Could Hamper Studies

Red tape and a mess of legal regulations are hampering cancer clinical trials in Europe, the director-general of one of Europe’s leading cancer research organisations said on Wednesday.

European Union countries are obliged to put an EU directive on good clinical practice into national law by May next year. But the directive is too open to interpretation in areas such as ethical approval, regulations for reporting adverse events, and informed consent documentation, said Professor Franoise Meunier from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).
