Vaccines May Protect Women From STDs, Cervical Cancer

Two vaccines may be able to help protect women from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and cervical cancer, according to the results of two studies reported in the Nov. 21 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, a human papillomavirus (HPV)-16 vaccine had 100% efficacy in protecting women not previously exposed.

“Administration of this HPV-16 vaccine reduced the incidence of both HPV-16 infection and HPV-16-related cervical intraepithelial neoplasia,” write Laura A. Koutsky, PhD, and colleagues from the Proof of Principle Study Investigators. “Immunizing HPV-16-negative women may eventually reduce the incidence of cervical cancer.”
