Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and alcohol use independently increase the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women, and combined, they almost double the risk, according to the results of a US population-based study published in the November 19th issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Wendy Y. Chen, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, and colleagues collected data on 44,186 postmenopausal women who participated in the Nurses Health Study. The researchers reviewed self-reports of breast cancer and HRT use from 1980 to 1994, and self-reports of alcohol use in 1980, 1984, 1986 and 1990.
