Results of a study published in the November issue of Pediatrics suggest that girls with Turner syndrome (TS) have impaired growth hormone (GH) secretion and action. While treatment with GH results in favorable changes in body composition in these patients, it is associated with relative impairment of glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.
In a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study, Dr. Claus Hojbjerg Gravholt, of Arhus Kommunehospital, Denmark, and colleagues examined the effects of GH treatment on insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, bone turnover, and body composition in girls with TS. Twelve girls with TS were compared with 16 age-matched controls.
