They cannot fly, hop or jump, yet head lice have become a global problem, particularly among young school children. Various theories have been put forward for how they spread, including physical contact and the sharing of towels and bedclothes. But the exact route of transmission has remained a mystery.
Now a team of researchers at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia has shown that in order for lice to switch heads, hairs on the ‘new’ head must be travelling in a specific direction and at a certain speed.
