There appears to be no safety advantage to mesalazine over sulphasalazine in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to a report in the October issue of Gut.
Drs. R. A. J. Ransford and M. J. S. Langman, from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK, examined differences in the serious adverse effect profiles associated with sulphasalazine and mesalazine treatment reported to the Committee on Safety of Medicines of the UK over a 9-year period. Patients included those with IBD with or without rheumatoid arthritis.
