Nornicotine, a minor constituent of tobacco and a metabolite of nicotine, increases the concentration of chemicals believed to play a role in aging and in the development of diabetes, cancer, atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease, scientists at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, report.
Drs. Tobin J. Dickerson and Kim D. Janda explain in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences early online edition for the week of October 28 that nornicotine causes the formation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs).
