Rituximab produces high overall and complete response rates and longer progression-free survival than that reported for standard treatment of indolent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), according to a report in the Oct. 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Investigators suggest that this should be first-line therapy, pending additional studies to evaluate its role in combination with chemotherapy.
“The results of this multicenter phase II trial, now with minimum follow-up of 24 months, confirm the high level of activity with single-agent rituximab in the first-line treatment of patients with indolent NHL,” write John D. Hainsworth, MD, from the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and colleagues.
