HIV Vaccine Designs Eliciting Neutralizing Antibodies Yield Promising Early Results

The pendulum appears to be swinging back again to the development of an HIV vaccine that elicits neutralizing antibodies–an approach, first pursued by researchers in the early days of HIV vaccine research, which yielded largely disappointing results.

Several sessions here at the XIII Cent Gardes Symposium this week were devoted to the issue of neutralizing HIV-1 antibodies and their role in protection. In recent years, induction of cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses has been a major focus of vaccine development. And although not abandoned, those trials have also fallen short of expectations.
