Cryosurgery Safe, Effective in Early, Localized Prostate Cancer

Laurie Barclay, MD Oct. 25, 2002 —

Cryosurgery seems to be as effective for the treatment of early localized prostate cancer as the standard treatments, including EBRT, 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT), and brachytherapy, according to the results of a prospective trial published in the October issue of Urology.

“The efficacy of cryosurgery appears to be superior to both EBRT and 3DCRT for high-risk patients and to EBRT for moderate-risk patients,” write Bryan J. Donnelly, MD, and colleagues from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. “Furthermore, the results from our series are comparable to both radical prostatectomy and brachytherapy for both medium and high-risk patients, as well as to 3DCRT for moderate-risk patients.”
