Results of a study published in the October issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology suggest that newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients may already suffer from vascular dysfunction.
Dr. Hannele Yki-Jarvinen and colleagues from the University of Helsinki, Finland, note that excessive mortality in RA patients is mainly caused by cardiovascular disease. They examined whether 10 newly diagnosed RA patients exhibited endothelial dysfunction compared with 33 controls and whether this dysfunction was reversible with 6 months of anti-inflammatory therapy for arthritis.
