In a head-to-head trial comparing pantoprazole with omeprazole in healthy patients, pantoprazole was substantially longer acting and produced significantly greater inhibition of pentagastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion.
In subjects who were considered responders, pantoprazole (Protonix, by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) inhibited gastric acid output throughout the 24-hour study, compared to 15 hours for omeprazole (Prilosec, by AstraZeneca).
In both cases, a single dose was used, using the standard dosing recommended for the treatment of erosive gastro-esophageal reflux: Pantoprazole at 40 mg daily and omeprazole at 20 mg daily. Dr. Vijaya S. Pratha, medical director of Clinical Applications Inc., and assistant clinical professor, University of California, San Diego, California, United States, presented the study here October 21 at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
