A slightly modified ketogenic diet might be effective in reducing seizures in adult patients with treatment-refractory epilepsy, Argentine researchers announced here at the 40th Argentine Congress of Neurology.
“A ketogenic diet has been traditionally used in children, but it can actually work as well in older patients,” co-author Dulli Mart n, of the Ramos Mej a Hospital in Buenos Aires, told Reuters Health.
Nutritionist Mart n and neurologist Silvia Kochen, of the University of Buenos Aires, prescribed a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet to 8 patients older than 20 years old who had not responded to medication and were unable to undergo surgical treatment. The researchers used a “3 parts fat to 1 part carbohydrate/protein diet” instead of the conventional 4:1 ketogenic diet.
