Recent reports have shown that acute wounds heal more slowly in elderly men than they do in elderly women. Now, findings from an animal study suggest that this difference is due to levels of testosterone.
Testosterone has been shown to increase the levels of several proinflammatory cytokines. However, the hormone’s effect on cutaneous wound healing and the local inflammatory response has not been evaluated.
