Intercostal Analgesic Injection May Speed Recovery After Open Heart Surgery

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Oct 07 –

In cardiac surgery patients, injection of bupivacaine with epinephrine into the intercostal spaces prior to chest closure can reduce the amount of narcotic analgesics needed postoperatively and shorten intubation times, according to a recent report.

Both of these outcomes can lead to faster recovery times, possibly resulting in shorter lengths of stay, study authors Dr. Thomas A. Hughes and William J. Fox, from Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend, Indiana, note.
