The benefits of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors outweigh any minor negative aspect of combining these drugs with aspirin, according to a systematic review published in the Oct. 5 issue of The Lancet. This conclusion differs from those of earlier studies suggesting that ACE inhibitors may be less effective in patients who also receive aspirin for the treatment of cardiovascular (CV) disease.
“Even though results from the present analyses cannot rule out the possibility of some sort of interaction, they show unequivocally that even if aspirin is given, the addition of ACE inhibitor therapy produced substantial additional benefit in all major vascular outcomes,” second author Salim Yusuf from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, says in a news release.
