UK drugmaker AstraZeneca earned the critical backing of expert advisors to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday, to market the first member of a new class of anti-cancer compounds under the brand name Iressa.
Iressa is a selective epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor, designed to penetrate cancer cells and block a pathway believed responsible for tumor growth. The FDA’s Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee voted 11 to 3 in favor of granting AstraZeneca accelerated approval for Iressa as a third-line treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
