Reducing patient dietary sodium intake has little effect or either cardiovascular events or mortality.
There also are doubts about effects of salt reduction on overall health, finds a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials by researchers at the University of Manchester and University of Bristol, England.
One specific benefit of lowering salt intake could allow some people to discontinue antihypertension medication, while at the same time maintaining good control of their blood pressure, the researchers add.
This detailed investigation included three trials with a total of 2,326 normotensive men and women, five trials with 387 patients with untreated hypertension, and three trials of 801 men and women being treated for hypertension, with follow up from six months to seven years.
