Psychiatric disorders, including panic attacks among adults, could be due to adverse childhood events.
The severity of the disorder may be influenced by these occurrences, say American researchers.
Nonetheless, they are unlikely to be a single risk factor for any one type of disorder across diagnostic groups attending psychiatric clinics. An acknowledged association between early traumatic life events, such as childhood physical and sexual abuse, led researchers to examine the incidence and influence of these events among patients attending psychiatric outpatient clinics.
Consequently, psychiatric researchers at the State University New York Health Science Centre in Brooklyn, New York enrolled 200 outpatients with psychiatric disorders. These included 101 with panic disorders who underwent comparisons with 58 suffering anxiety disorders, 19 with major depression and 22 diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia. Structured clinical interviews and self report-questionnaires provided necessary data.
