The sensitivity of mammography declines significantly with increasing breast density, to as low at 48% among women the densest breasts, according to the results of a new study. But sensitivity can be maximized with the addition of ultrasonography, investigators report.
At a press briefing here on Thursday, hosted by the American Medical Association, lead investigator Thomas M. Kolb of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York presented findings for 11,130 asymptomatic women who underwent a total of 27,825 breast cancer screening sessions, which consisted of mammography and physical examination. Women with dense breasts also underwent screening ultrasonography.
“Density is the most significant predictor of mammography sensitivity,” Dr. Kolb told briefing attendees.
