Eating soft food has contributed to an evolutionary change in people’s faces, making chins more pointed and noses more prominent, according to a German investigator.
Dr. Ulrich Witzel, who lectures in engineering and biomechanics at Bochum University, has spent 4 years studying the changing shape of the human skull and jawbone going back to prehistoric times.
After adapting an engineering technique known as the Finite Element Method to work out how bite forces have affected the development of the skull and jaw bone, Dr. Witzel concluded that the rise in the consumption of soft foods, such as soups and pasta, has had a major impact on the way people look.
