A low-dose oral contraceptive (OC) that contains ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel appears to be a safe and effective treatment for moderate acne, according to a report published in the September issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Androgen hormones have been shown to increase sebum production, which is thought to play an important role in the development of acne, the current report’s authors note. OCs are known to decrease circulating androgen levels, and several reports have shown that treatment with such drugs improves acne.
