In patients infected with Helicobacter pylori, treatment of the infection reduces the occurrence of peptic ulcers related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, according to a report published in the September issue of Gut.
The concept of treating H. pylori infection to reduce the occurrence of NSAID-related ulcers is controversial, the authors note. In fact, it is possible that H. pylori infection protects against NSAID-related ulcers and, conversely, that NSAIDs reduce the damage that might otherwise be caused by the bacteria, they write.
