Long-term avoidance of cow milk appears to be associated with small stature and poor bone health.
Researchers at the University of Otago Medical School, Dunedin, New Zealand, studied 30 girls and 20 boys, aged three to ten years, who were long-term avoiders of cow milk. Current calcium intake was tracked with a food questionnaire, and body composition and bone mineral density were measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results were compared with 200 milk-drinking control children.
