Patients with early onset chondrocalcinosis should be routinely offered genetic testing for hemochromatosis, UK researchers recommend.
“Chondrocalcinosis is a common form of arthritis affecting particularly the elderly, with 20% of people of 70 years of age or older having the condition,” Dr. Matthew Brown from the Wellcome Trust Center for Human Genetics, Headington, noted in comments to Reuters Health.
“Whilst in most cases the cause is unknown, in some cases it can occur as a consequence of other conditions. One such condition is hemochromatosis. This condition is easily treated, and therefore very important to diagnose,” he said.
