Local application of methylprednisolone acetate following lumbar discectomy helps to reduce pain for up to two weeks.
Ronen Debi and colleagues at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in Zerifin, Israel, conducted a prospective clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of epidural steroids in reducing pain following lumbar disc surgery.
Sixty-one patients undergoing lumbar discectomy were randomly assigned to receive, either 80 mg methylprednisolone acetate or the same amount (2 mL) of saline immediately after removal of their disc.
All discs were removed in the same way by unilateral flavectomy. Both steroid and saline were delivered via a soaked 2.5 × 2.5 cm square of collagen absorbable hemostat (Instat) that was left on the decompressed nerve root, the investigators repoted.
