Middle-aged coeliacs who have never smoked account for an inverse association found between adult coeliac disease and cigarette smoking.
“These results are consistent with an age-dependent interaction between cigarette smoking and the other environmental factors implicated in coeliac disease, including gluten”, say investigators at Derby City Hospital Trust, Derby, England.
Dietary gluten ingestion is known to induce the disease in genetically susceptible individuals. It was not known, however, whether its onset was influenced by other environmental factors.
